The right choice depends less on taste than on how the room is used, which way the wall faces and what\u2019s directly in front of the window. Here\u2019s how to sort it out.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It opens outward with a crank, like a door. When closed, the sash is pressed against the frame: it\u2019s the most airtight configuration, and the one that lets in the most air when opened wide. An excellent choice for the living room, bedrooms and any hard-to-reach spot, such as behind a kitchen counter.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Same mechanism, but the sash is hinged at the top. That means it can stay partly open during a rain shower without letting water in. It\u2019s often installed in basements and bathrooms, or in a row above a door or fixed window to provide ventilation without sacrificing the view.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The sash slides sideways and never projects past the wall. It\u2019s the solution when the window opens onto a balcony, patio, sidewalk or entryway: nothing gets in the way. It\u2019s also very easy to operate day to day.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The sash lifts vertically.
