Sunshine makes us happy! So don’t go without it at home! But what can you do when your home’s windows don’t let much light in? Here are a few options available to you, if your home’s layout allows it, of course!
Renovations
- When replacing your windows, consider enlarging the glazed area.
- Along the same lines, it’s sometimes even possible to enlarge the window opening and replace the window with a patio door.
- Were your windows positioned without the sun in mind? Look into having new window openings cut into particularly sunny walls.
- Opt for a front door with door glass and, if space allows, treat yourself to a double door (with glass) or plan to add a sidelight or a (glazed) side panel.
Outdoor adjustments
If trees, shrubs or climbing plants are blocking the light, changes to your landscaping may be worth considering and can make a huge difference!
A few options indoors
Beyond major renovation projects, simpler options are available to you inside the home, such as:
- Avoid placing furniture too close to windows or covering part of your windows with bulky curtains or blinds that take up a lot of space at the sides or top of the window
- Make decorating choices that promote brightness. The word to remember: “light.” Light-coloured walls, light-coloured flooring (and avoid dark, heavy rugs), light-coloured furniture, etc.!
- To make up for the lack of light in certain rooms or at certain times of day, make sure your indoor lighting is adequate (ceiling lights, floor lamps, etc.)
