Window condensation: a bad sign?

Window condensation: a bad sign?

Table of Contents

You know the cold has arrived when condensation appears on your windows. This phenomenon, which occurs when a cold surface (like a window) meets moisture-laden air, happens mainly in the fall and winter.

Should you be concerned? The short answer is yes. But not because condensation automatically means there’s a problem with your windows… in fact, your problem may have more to do with the humidity inside your home! Pay close attention to it, because condensation can lead to damage and mould.

In winter, make sure your indoor humidity level stays below 35%. If you still have condensation, you may have an insulation problem. In that case, it’s important to talk to a specialist!

How can you prevent it?

  • Make sure your windows are well insulated.
  • Remove your screens in the fall.
  • Choose highly energy-efficient doors and windows.
  • Let your windows breathe as much as possible (open your curtains, raise your blinds, etc.)
  • Run the kitchen fan when cooking and the bathroom fan when you shower.
  • etc.!

If you notice moisture trapped between the panes of your windows (meaning the glass isn’t damp to the touch), that’s a sign of a problem. Contact an expert.
